Research & Outreach

The Centre for Hospitality Studies and Research (CHSR) at Bliss of Hinton was established to provide high quality educational experiences together with an evidence-based applied research and knowledge management program to assist the hospitality industry and destinations in secondary hub cities and regions. The Centre recognizes the importance of learning and research in helping smaller communities and hospitality operations to improve the quality of life of the communities in which they are situated and create profitable, memorable and sustainable visitor experiences.

To support its applied research activities, CHSR has established two nonprofit research institutes: the Tourism and Community Economic Development Institute (TEDI) and the Hospitality Service Design and Innovation Institute (HSDI).

The applied research dimensions of the Centre are oriented to address the challenges and opportunities facing the hospitality and tourism industry in secondary hubs and regions including the significant need for timely, evidence-based and user-friendly data and best practices including shortages of labour, new hospitality related technologies, the measurement of hospitality and visitor economy impacts, seasonality, changing consumer preferences, climate change, carrying capacities, new hospitality models and the need for integrated approaches to hospitality and tourism. In addressing these challenges, the Centre will work with a range of local, regional and global stakeholders to provide practical applied research.

Academic hospitality and tourism institutions together with industry groups are producing significant amounts of hospitality and tourism publications. Given that level of activity, hospitality and tourism practitioners are faced with a significant amount of information and data “infoglut”. In addition, there is a need to bridge the gap between academic and industry publications and the creation of user-friendly and evidence-based information that will be immediately relevant to the professionals on the ground.
